本書有14個單元,每單元分為7至8個部分:

1.思考與討論(Think & Discuss)

2.腦力激盪(Brainstorming)

4.閱讀理解(Reading Comprehension)
提供數個讀後問題討論或是非題,測驗文章理解程度,並提供文章所提的議題深度討論。

5.情境對話(Dialogue)
與單元主題相關的情境對話,透過角色之間的對談,熟悉在跨文化生活中的議題呈現。亦附有朗讀音檔,幫助強化聽力。

6.對話討論(Dialogue Discussion)
對話結束後有數個討論問題,藉此測驗對會話內容的理解,並激發學生討論日常生活中的跨文化議題。

7.進階討論(Further Discussion)
視單元主題而定,提供與主題相關的延伸問題,讓學生除了單元內的主要跨文化概念外,也可探索延伸的議題。

8.觸類旁通(Making Connections)
在每單元的結尾,提供延伸的閱讀素材、研究主題或實作活動,加強對主題的理解,幫助學以致用。

Designed for college students who are at a high-intermediate level of English proficiency, this book provides an effective introduction to different aspects of cross-cultural encounters. Using language suitable for both purpose and audience, this book explores various topics related to cross-cultural interaction, such as communication, education, gender, and food.
The aim of this book is to equip students with the ability to deal with cross-cultural situations and help them develop an open-minded attitude towards people from different cultures.
Consisting of carefully arranged elements such as informative readings, real-life dialogues, in-depth discussions, engaging after-class activities, and colorful illustrations, this book is also a useful learning tool for those who would like to expand their English vocabulary, cultivate better reading skills, and enhance their listening comprehension.
There are 14 units in this book, with each unit divided into seven or eight sections:
1.Think & Discuss
Each Think & Discuss section contains a picture and accompanying questions related to the topic of the unit. This section serves as a warm-up, building up students’ ability to comprehend visual scenarios and allowing them to share their thoughts with classmates.
2.Brainstorming
Each unit contains a number of brainstorming questions related to the article in Guided Reading, allowing students to reflect on ideas or issues that are presented in the article and form their own opinions before reading it.
3.Guided Reading
This section contains an article exploring the topic in a cross-cultural context, providing students with cross-cultural knowledge and fostering open-mindedness in them when they deal with cross-cultural issues. There is also an audio file that goes along with this section for students to enhance their listening competency.
4.Reading Comprehension
This section provides either reading comprehension questions or a True or False quiz to test students’ understanding of the article and open in-depth discussions on the ideas presented in the article.
5.Dialogue
Each unit contains a dialogue that plays out scenarios related to the topic. Through conversations between characters, students can derive a general picture of how cross-cultural encounters may happen in real life. Like the Guided Reading section, this section comprises an audio file to help students strengthen their listening ability.
6.Dialogue Discussion
A number of discussion questions follow each dialogue to test students’ comprehension of the dialogue and prompt them to discuss the real-life issues raised.
7.Further Discussion
Some units contain a further discussion section in which students can engage more deeply with issues that are connected to the main topic. It gives students an opportunity to examine and reflect on cross-cultural ideas that are relevant to today’s world.
8.Making Connections
This concluding section provides suggestions for extra reading materials, research topics, or activities that will enrich students’ knowledge of the topic and apply what they have learned to real life.

Mohamed Reddad

於摩洛哥的費地茲大學取得英國文學以及語言學學士,於穆罕默德五世大學的教育科學學院取得TEFL的證照,並於紐約艾德菲大學取得TESOL的碩士學位。一直以來於摩洛哥、美國及台灣從事EFL教學與課程設計,並於摩洛哥的美國和平工作團擔任語言指導師及跨文化協調者。目前於台灣義守大學的應用英語學系任教。

Mohamed Reddad received his bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Linguistics from the University of Fez, and a TEFL certificate from the College of Educational Sciences at the University of Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco. He received his master’s degree in TESOL from Adelphi University, New York. Mohamed Reddad has worked as an EFL teacher and curriculum developer in Morocco, the United States and Taiwan. He has also worked as a language instructor and cross-culture coordinator for the United States Peace Corps in Morocco. Mohamed Reddad is presently teaching in the Department of Applied English at I-Shou University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Yukiri Kusaka

於英國巴斯大學取得經濟管理的理學碩士學位,曾任教台灣義守大學的觀光學系,目前任教於應用日語學系。Yukiri Kusaka曾獲頒數座獎項,其中包含兩座教學卓越獎。致力於輔助教師實習計畫、畢業公演、海外交換計畫,以及教授日本和服與浴衣課程。

Yukiri Kusaka received her master of science degree in Financial Management from the University of Bath, UK. Over the past sixteen years, she has worked in the Department of Tourism and the Department of Applied Japanese. She has received two Excellent Awards in teaching and numerous counseling awards. She is actively engaged in teacher internship programs, graduation plays, overseas exchange programs, and traditional Japanese kimono and yukata lessons. She is currently teaching in the Department of Applied Japanese at I-Shou University, Taiwan.

Paul C. Talley

於台灣國立高雄師範大學取得應用語言學以及TESOL博士學位,曾教授應用英語以及商用英語的相關課程,並於國立及私立學校任教,目前任教於台灣義守大學的應用英語學系,他也是Reticence in the EFL Classroom: A Study in a Taiwanese EFL Context一書的作者之一。

Paul C. Talley received his PhD degree in Applied Linguistics and TESOL from National Kaohsiung Normal University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. For the past sixteen years, he has taught applied English and Business English coursework. He has taught junior high school and high school and many advanced executive-level courses for both private and public entities. He is currently on the faculty of the Department of Applied English at I-Shou University, Taiwan. He is also a co-author of Reticence in the EFL Classroom: A Study in a Taiwanese EFL Context.

Po-Ting Fang, Grace

目前任教於大學,研究領域包括口筆譯教學,文學翻譯研究和多媒體應用。其目前研究方向除了持續發展多元翻譯實驗外,更因熱愛西班牙語和西班牙文化,而從事西語教學及相關的教學法研究。

Ching-Yi Tien(田靜誼)

於英國萊斯特大學取得應用語言學以及TESOL的博士學位,教授過的學生年齡層橫跨3歲到60歲以上。曾致力於參與教師訓練計畫、大規模專案,也曾在國際研討會上演講。目前任教於台灣義守大學的應用英語學系,曾寫過許多EFL教科書,如Office Talk: Workplace English VocabularyEnglish for Health and Medical CareKET for School Preparation,以及MICE English: Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions, and Exhibitions等。

Ching-Yi Tien received her PhD degree in Applied Linguistics and TESOL from the University of Leicester, UK. Over the past eighteen years, she has worked with different student age groups, ranging from 3 years old up to 60 and plus. She was actively engaged in teacher training programs, large-scale projects and presented at the international conferences. She is currently teaching in the Department of Applied English at I-Shou University, Taiwan. She has written several EFL textbooks, such as Office Talk: Workplace English Vocabulary, English for Health and Medical Care, KET for School Preparation, and MICE English: Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions, and Exhibitions.
